Leonardo's AW09 Helicopter Gains Momentum with Strong Sales and Successful Flight Test
Leonardo Helicopters is making remarkable progress with the Kopter AW09 helicopter program, targeting 100 orders by year-end and accelerating production. With over 50 preliminary sales contracts secured and expectations to reach 60 before summer, the company foresees a potential total of 200 orders before the helicopter's projected certification in the second half of 2024. Initial deliveries are planned for late 2024, followed by an increase in the subsequent year.
To enhance performance, Kopter made significant design improvements. They replaced the original powerplant with the Safran Helicopter Engines Arriel 2K turboshaft, resulting in improved stability and handling qualities. The modifications include integrating the longer Arriel engine, redesigning the engine deck, and producing new parts. The AW09 also features advanced enhancements such as reshaped rotor blades, additional skid gear fairings, and a more aerodynamic fuselage.
Leonardo has signed preliminary sales contracts with customers from various regions, including LATAM, South East Asia, South Africa, Central America, Oceania, and Japan. The acquisition of the AW09 program positions the company as a key player in the Long Light Single segment. By introducing an all-new design and integrating the reliable Arriel 2K engine, Leonardo aims to replicate the success of its best-selling AW139 helicopter.
Leonardo's dedication to innovation and collaboration, coupled with strong market demand and the AW09's impressive performance, ensure a bright future for this advanced helicopter in the global aviation industry.
